Identifying Local Opportunities

5 Local Opportunities in Vero Beach, FL

1) "A historic soaking"
This past week, my hometown of Vero Beach endured one of the wettest days in recorded history. A mind blowing 11.22" fell in a 24 hour period, shattering the previous records. The mass flooding and appearance of two tornadoes has caused severe damage to many of the county's areas as well as shutting down local public schools. The citizens of Vero Beach are scrambling to find flood damage repair companies.

2) "Smuggling case lands 8 in custody"
The same night of the flooding mentioned above, a small vessel washed ashore that was part of a human and drug smuggling attempt. A total of 8 people were taken into custody as well as a duffel bag containing 26 pounds of marijuana. Drug smuggling is a problem that occurs up and down the east coast of Florida. The local residents face harm when coming into contact with these dangerous people.

3) "Beware, beer drinkers: Craft labels are not as they seem"
Lots of people love to buy and drink craft beers. Many people feel they're giving the smaller labels more business by staying away from the corporate brands. Many people, mistakenly, think they're drinking a small-chain microbrew when it's really owned by one of the largest beer producers in the world.

4) "Home prices in Broward continue to rise in April"
This past April was a very successful month for the real estate for Broward county, especially along the coast. This is a positive for those in the real estate market, but for those looking for a home it is the opposite. The latest success trend will result in an increase in real estate pricing throughout Broward county, affecting those looking to purchase in the coming months.

5) "Nile crocs found in Everglades likely related, study finds -- and more may be out there"
South Miami-Dade residents might be frightened to learn of a growing threat lurking in the Everglades. Nile crocodiles have been becoming more and more prevalent, growing at a rate of 28% faster than crocodiles in their native habitats. The Nile crocodile species poses a huge threat to humans nearby because of their aggressive nature. Although Nile crocodiles are considered an endangered species, scientists running these studies have gotten permits to capture these crocodiles in an effort to not allow them to become as numerous as the Burmese python. Hopefully the neighboring communities surrounding the Everglades will be able to control the Nile crocodile species and not allow for them to overrun the native species that live there.

  1. Hi Anderson,

I enjoyed reading the local opportunities that you found. I believe Vero Beach should have an emergency plan when the city receives a lot of rain fall, it is always a good idea to have a weather emergency plan ready whenever unexpected weather approaches. Drug smuggling is a serious issue, there should be police near the coast and on the coast keeping an eye for potential smugglers. 3. Interesting articles. Good job on the assignment. You did a good job pointing out exactly who the problems effected. You also had a broad variety of articles which makes it nice when you have to read several of them.

  4. Anderson,
It's interesting about the craft beers. Once the "big guys" realized that people would pay more for the craft beers, they jumped in with creating their own. And now they pull in the higher profit margin, simply because the average beer consumer thinks they are helping the "little guy".

  5. Anderson,

That's crazy about Vero Beach. It rained significantly in South Florida as well. That's ironic that a drug smuggling ship washed ashore on the same night. And I used the same article for your #3!!! I really liked it since I'm an avid beer drinker. Looks like I also used your #5. Go Gators

  7. Hey Anderson,

It's crazy that Vero Beach got so much rain! I honestly didn't even know the rain had gotten that bad down there at all. Two tornadoes don't sound too fun either. It's also definitely pretty funny that people will purchase those crafts beer just to spite the big companies and fall right into their trap. I heard about the Nile crocodiles in the Everglades also. I remembering hearing about anacondas being spotted down there a few years ago; I'm glad to hear they're getting some even better company.
